![]() The closest I've ever done to that was walking around the olivine pools in northwest Maui, where the tidepools had a lot of juvenile tropical fish, and a few tidepool natives. I don't even know what other habitats there are that are easily accessible for snorkeling. Over there, seagrass beds are home to more eels, especially snake eels, and fish families that aren't found on the reefs much like mojarras, and mangrove roots are where all sorts of juvenile fish grow up.īut I haven't ever done anything like that in Hawaii. In the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, for example, I really enjoy taking one day to explore an area of seagrass beds, or the edge of the mangroves, or the shallows in the surf where blennies and triplefins like to live. Plus, the ride on Redline’s nimble 35-foot raft is an adventure in itself. ![]() Redline’s South Coast excursion also stops at Molokini’s back wall for a quick snorkel sesh, weather permitting. However, some of my favorite snorkeling experiences have been the one outing where I spend a couple of hours in a completely different habitat, on a trip that's otherwise mostly coral reefs or rock reefs or artificial structure reefs. This company is usually the first to reach Molokini’s perpetually-crowded crater in the morning, allowing for an hour or so of undisturbed snorkeling. I plan to do the same on my upcoming trip after new years.
